James Cleveland Owens was born in Alabama in 1913. He became known as Jesse due to a teacher not understanding him when he called himself J.C. Growing up in Ohio, Jesse became involved in track during Junior High School. He set records through those years and into High School which lead him to Ohio State University.
The year before he went to Berlin, Owens was able to set three world records and tie a fourth one. In 1936, Owens went to Berlin for the Olympics. Although he experienced much racisim and segration in the United States, surprisingly Owens always stated that Hitler was polite with him -congratulating him on his accomplishments and taking a picture with him. During the time, media claims stated that Owens had been "snubbed" by Hitler, but other witnesses also said this was not the case.
Owens went on to win four Gold medals at the Berline 1936 Olympic games. Later in life he became a US Goodwill Ambassador and traveled doing public speaking. For more information on Jesse Owens, you can visit www.jesseowens.com/about.
